Charcoal from Life

Charcoal on Paper | 18” x 12” | 2023

Still life study on composition, value, perspective, and proportions

This drawing began with a set of thumbnail sketches to explore the compositions I had available. I then spent the majority of the time doing my pencil sketches to map proportions and negative spaces. This project was then finished with charcoal in which my primary shading tool was paper stubs.

The Mess

Pen on Paper | 9.5” x 7” | 2022-23

A study and practice of line weights and the illusion of value using a variety of line weights.

This piece started as a few circles and lines and eventually filled the page. I began working on this as a way to destress from my work, so I only worked on it for about 30 minutes every day on my lunch breaks. Featured in the drawing are a few skeletal figures and lots of organic shapes; subjects I felt I wanted to practice drawing without using gradient shading.

Agave Nocterna

Linoleum ink print on paper | 8” x 6” | 2023

Linoleum carving study on line weight, thematic delivery, contrast, and negative space

The piece was my contribution to class-wide collaborative project to make a design out of a linoleum block with a predetermined line. I knew I wanted the line to be either a cactus or some assortment of bones. I also knew I wanted to include both a skeletal figure and desert vegetation. The subject matter is inspired by Mexican prints and imagery.
